Application of Livos Oils on Furniture

Full PDF Version - Click Here

Livos oils are a blend of natural oils resins and waxes. They penetrate into the top pores of the timber or substrate. Correct application creates a beautiful durable surface and allows ease of rejuvenation at a later stage. The oil is ready to use and it should be noted that dilution will distort the qualities of the oil. By cutting back in between coats (prior to the next coat) the wax crystals are flattened creating a more durable and shiner finish. Do not cut back aggressively as the fibres are not raised.

PREPARATION

Sand furniture gradually with sandpaper up to150- 180 grit. Sanding too finely “glazes” the surface and closes the pores reducing the penetrating quality of the oil. Do not use or store oil below 12º.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Oil
  • Brush or Cloth (or other application device)
  • Finer paper, steel wool or non abrasive pad
  • Air tight sealed container for used rags/pads etc.

APPLICATION

1st COAT

Stir well. Saturate the surface with the oil. There must be a wet oil film on the surface. If oil is absorbed earlier, add more oil. After 15-20 minutes saturation time (depending on temperature and humidity), remove any excess oil from the surface. For an especially smooth and heavy-duty surface, polish the wet film on the first 2 coats with a pad of at least 280 grain or a lint-free cloth. Dry furniture/benches with clean absorbent rags ensuring that the timber is touch dry. This is vitally important as the oil requires oxygen to commence the hardening process. Allow drying overnight with as much access to light and ventilation as possible.

Depending on surface requirement, absorbency and the type of wood, apply 2 to 3 thin coats on consecutive days.

2nd COAT

Stir well. The second oil coat should be applied, thinly. Repeat steps for 1st coat. Less oil will be used than for previous coat. If left too long it may start to become tacky. If this happens, work in some more oil to dissolve it again and wipe off. Leave overnight.

3rd COAT (allow an extra day if very cold or humid)

The 3rd coat must be polished in immediately after application drop by drop using approx. 1 teaspoon per m².

IMPORTANT TIPS

If unsure of the material a test application is recommended. On heavy-duty surfaces apply at least 3 coats. Decant any unused oil into a smaller container for future use. To achieve a higher sheen level a fourth coat may be applied as per 3rd coat. The finished timber must not have a thick layer of oil on top. In grooves, the KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer No. 244 should be completely removed. Wood not completely saturated with KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer and exposed to water may develop stains or discoloration. For glued crosscut wood or wood veneers, with a minimum of 0.5 mm after sanding, the 1st coat is to be applied very thinly, and the wet film to be removed after 5 minutes. For glued crosscut wood or wood veneers, with a surface coat of less than 0.5 mm, the KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer is not suitable. Adhesives and glues have to be completely dry before treatment with the 1st KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer coat. When using colored KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer or KALDET Transparent Wood Stain #270, make sure to sand evenly and apply sparingly. KUNOS Natural Oil Sealer white as an initial treatment preserves the natural wood tone.

*****SAFETY INFORMATION*****

Always be sure to store cleaning rags or sponges that are still wet or even slightly moist with Livos oils in an airtight metal container or in water, as there is a danger of spontaneous combustion caused by the linseed oil in the product. The product alone will not undergo spontaneous combustion.

The information set out below in respect to the preparation and application of LIVOS oils and safety information is based on many years of experience applying these oils on various timbers in commercial and domestic locations. If these instructions and suggestions are followed you should have a quality timber finish. However no responsibility can be accepted where we have not supervised or applied the oils. By following some recommendations, the life of your low maintenance bench tops and/or furniture is prolonged.

Do not use or store oil below 12º
